Historical path Sogesti

The historical path Sogestien is a marked path running along the Fitjadalen lake. You can view cultural historical discoveries such as rock carvings, old settlements, old farm houses and traditional boathouses. Along the path you will find signboards with historical information telling the story of how this area was used in older times. An illustrated textbook and a map for the trip can be bought at the local tourist information. 

Rock carvings

In Vangdal, 9 km from Norheimsund in direction Tørvikbygd/Strandebarm, tehre are two petroglyph sites. The rocks are carvings from two different time periods, which is quite unique in Norway. One carving illustrate viking ships, these approx. 3000 years old. The other site has animal carvings from approx. 5000 years ago. The historical path in Fitjadalen, not far from Øystese, contains a smaller carving showing a boat. 

Churces in Kvam

In Kvam there are 5 churches. The church in Øystese is from 1868 an was renovated in 1948. It is built in neo-gothic style. During the summer this church is open for visitors. 

Ålvik Industrial Museum

The Ålvik Industrial Museum is located in a neoclassical building from approx. 1920. The museum shows two typical worker`s dwellings, one with interior from 1920, the other one from 1950. The exhibition presents earlier industry in Ålvik. The museum is open by appointment. Tlf.: +47 56 55 30 00

Rural museum Storeteigen

The rural museum Storeteigen is situated right outside Øystese. It consists of farmhouses and buildings from mid. 17th century to approx. 1900. Mainly the museum offers guided tours for schools but for groups it is possible to make an appointment for a guided tour in the museum. Tlf.: 56 55 39 00.

Kinck- house

The Kinck- house in Strandebarm, at the route Fv 49 is an old swiss- style house from 1876. It is the Home of the author Hans E. Kinck. In summer there are art exhibitions at the Kinck- house. Tlf.: +47 415 76 020
Rural museum Borgstova

Borgstova on Vikøy old vicarage is also known as the Tidemand room, named after the famous painter Adolph Tidemand who found inspiration for several of his most renowed works here. From mid. June to mid. August the museum is opened on Wednesdays from 11:00 - 15:00. Tel.: +47 56 55 39 00.

Hardanger Fartøyvernsenter

The Hardanger Maritime Museum (Hardanger Fartøyvernsenter) in Norheimsund is a thrieving museum warf. Visitors can view craftsmen at work, maritime exhibitions and enjoy the activity trail with tasks for the whole family. The Museum has a café and a museum shop. Ingebrigt Vik Museum

Ingebrigt Vik (1867-1927) is one of the most skilful sculptors in Norwegian art history. In the museum in Øystese centre you can view selected works in bronze, marble and plaster. Ingebrigt Vik Museum


The arthouse Kabuso is located centrally in Øystese. Kabuso offers changing art exhibitions and concerts throughout the year. You will find a café with home made cakes and a museum shop with art souveniers.
